High-Resolution CMYK Printing with Gloss, Matte.
Picking packaging for a CBD product is a different problem than picking packaging for soap or cereal. The box has to survive a shipping lane, carry a stack of legally sensitive label information, protect a cannabinoid formulation from light and heat, and still look like something a customer would pay $40 for. This guide walks through how experienced hemp brands make those decisions — material, structure, print, compliance, and cost — so you can brief your packaging supplier with confidence.
Four jobs, in rough order of importance:
Kraft paperboard is the default for eco-positioned brands. It has a visible fibre texture that reads as natural without any printed texture effect, it takes soy-based inks well, and it is curbside recyclable in most US municipalities. The trade-off is colour fidelity: CMYK on brown kraft is muted, so brands that want saturated brand colours usually print a white underbase or reserve one flat colour. Kraft suits tincture cartons, balm boxes, and any line whose story is sustainability. See our kraft box options for weights and styles.
SBS (solid bleached sulfate) paperboard is the premium-coated choice — bright white, smooth, and the best substrate for photographic print and fine regulatory type. If your label carries a dense Supplement Facts panel with 7 pt type, SBS is the forgiving stock. It is recyclable, though not from post-consumer waste the way uncoated kraft is.
Corrugated (E-flute for retail-ready shippers, B-flute for transit) is what you reach for when the box is also the shipping container — subscription shipments, bundles, display-ready cartons. Modern E-flute prints close to litho quality, so brands are increasingly shipping direct-to-consumer in a printed corrugated mailer instead of a plain brown shipper plus a printed insert. Our corrugated boxes cover both use cases.
Rigid (setup) boxes are two-piece greyboard constructions wrapped in printed or textured paper. They cost several times more per unit than a folding carton, which limits them to launch kits, gift sets, and high-price-point bundles — but nothing else communicates "premium" as immediately. Details are on our rigid box page.
Foil Mylar pouches deserve a separate mention because they solve a problem paper cannot: moisture and oxygen barrier. For gummies, softgels, and flower, a resealable Mylar pouch with a child-resistant zipper inside a printed carton is a common two-part system. Compare custom Mylar bags for barrier specs.
Structure is where most first-time brands either overspend or under-engineer. A practical mapping:
Short runs (100–499 units) are printed digitally; above that, offset lithography gives better unit economics and tighter colour control. Most packaging programs specify CMYK for imagery and a PMS spot colour for the brand mark, because CMYK builds of a corporate blue drift between press runs and a CBD brand's shelf presence depends on that blue being identical at reorder 12.
Finishes do specific jobs rather than being decoration:
Regulatory panels should never sit under soft-touch or foil — scanners and consumers need flat, matte, high-contrast type. Print barcodes with quiet zones intact, and test a sample at retail before the full run.
This is a packaging overview, not legal advice — have final artwork reviewed by counsel before you print. Three layers to plan for:
Federal baseline. Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp-derived products must be derived from hemp containing no more than 0.3% THC on a dry-weight basis, and the marketing must not make drug claims — structure your front panel copy as structure/function or lifestyle language, not treatment language. The FDA retains authority over added CBD in food and dietary supplements, and FTC enforces advertising claims; both have issued warning letters to brands making explicit health claims. Budget your copywriting accordingly. Check current FDA guidance and FTC advertising guidance each time you revise a carton.
Label payload. Reserve a fixed back-panel module for: Supplement Facts (or Drug Facts where applicable), ingredient list, net contents, "keep out of reach of children," manufacturer/distributor name and address, lot/batch number with a best-by or manufacture date, UPC-A or GS1-128, and a QR code resolving to the batch COA. Several states — California, Colorado, and others among them — impose additional warning statements; treat the strictest state you sell into as your design constraint. A paired product label on the primary container keeps bottle and carton data identical.
Child-resistance. If your product could plausibly be confused with candy, or if you sell into jurisdictions that mandate it for ingestibles, specify a child-resistant structure — a push-and-turn insert, a locking tab,
